What is prayer?
There are several types of prayer spoken of in the Bible, some by name and some by prayer in action. I am often asked about the difference between types of prayer.
For example what is the difference between prayer and intercession or what makes prayer prophetic. It helps to break this all down.
Definitions of prayer: ( Ref: Poet Assistant)
n. a fixed text used in praying
n. earnest or urgent request
n. reverent petition to a deity
n. someone who prays to God
n. the act of communicating with a deity (especially as a petition or in adoration or contrition or thanksgiving)
The Person Holy Spirit
Luke 3:16 reads; John answered them all, saying, “I baptize you with water, but he who is mightier than I is coming, the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire.
There are scriptures that refer to praying in the spirit, praying with understanding , speaking of prayer language given by the Holy Spirit after baptism in Spirit.
Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words. Rom. 8:26
1 Corinthians 2:10-11 But God has revealed them to us through His Spirit. For the Spirit searches all things, yes, the deep things of God. For what man knows the things of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so no one knows the things of God except the Spirit of God.
Prayer is communication with a deity. For the followers of Jesus Christ; we obey His instructions given to the disciples and pray ” to our Father in heaven” in the name of Jesus.
( See Matt. 6:9-13, John 14:13-14)
So what makes prayer prophetic?
Let’s look at the term prophetic.
*Prophetic- a.) the name given to the predictive spheres of supernatural communications, acts, and influences from the spiritual world and its citizens. b.) The ministry and work of the prophet c.) The disciplines and practices of revelatory ministry.
Ref.– The Prophets Dictionary by Paula A. Price, PH.D
Way back in Genesis, we read where Adam and Eve “walked and talked with God” in the ” cool of the day”
And they heard the voice of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day: and Adam and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God amongst the trees of the garden.
Walking and Talking- the silent part is they each had to be listening and responding.
Prayer is meant to be a dialogue not a monologue;
Adam and Eve walked and talked, and countless others all throughout the Word of God did the same, they had conversations with the Lord. Many throughout the ages have ongoing daily fellowship with God by His Spirit.
When the Spirit of God speaks to individuals ( in various forms such as visions, dreams, pictures) His words often come with revelation, and are supernatural communications.
Hearing the Spirit of God speak to you and following instructions in prayer can be expressed in many ways.
The wind blows where it wants, and you hear the sound thereof, but can not tell from where it comes, and where it goes: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
Strong’s Hebrew7307. ruach — breath, wind, spirit
… 7306, 7307. ruach. 7308 . breath, wind, spirit. Transliteration: ruach
Phonetic Spelling: (roo’-akh) Short Definition: spirit. Word
The term prophetic is not the same as prophet, this is important to understand.
Prophetic can mean a gift set, an annointing giving expression to; it does not neccessarily mean one is a prophet.
Worship is a big part of entering into this place of prayer!
Grandmothers can be in prophetic prayer as they wave their white handkerchiefs unto the Lord as a Prayer of Surrender.
Flag worship is a form of prophetic prayer, the meaning behind the colors on the flags waved is being sent as a prophetic prayer unto the Lord.
The Spirit of God expresses Himself through various personalities and means as we yield and allow Him to do so.
(( and we need not get weird with it!))
The cool of the day phrase in Genesis 3:8, hints to a breeze, a gentle atmosphere difference, a wind.
The prophetic gifting and annointings often come with the wind of the Spirit.
Intercession or prophetic intercession is actually standing in the gap.
Inter’ – in the gap, enter into
Genuine Intercessors will get in the mud, the pit, the fire etc with you in prayer. They will carry your burden seeing it through until victory.
It’s the power of the Holy Spirit guiding, giving insight as to how to pray, and prophetic prayer always has intercessory overtones and is mixed with authorities prayer, like decrees, declarations, and commands.
• All Prophets are intercessors; but not all intercessors are prophetic
•In trusting the gentle breeze in the cool of the day, prophetic types are yielding to the still small voice in all His various ways of communicating with them.
•The Holy Spirit reveals how to pray
I will stand at my watch and station myself on the ramparts; I will look to see what he will say to me, and what answer I am to give to this complaint.’ (Hab 2:1)
This prayer requires a deep relationship with the Holy Spirit and a rich prayer life in a vessel cultivated in love❤
Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Prov. 18:21
Creative Prayer- praying in faith combined with legalities such as we reap what we sow or the power of our words bring life or death.
Our expression of prayer is to get creative with the Creator! I also call this creative prayer. Praying while creating a piece of art/craft that speaks a truth.
We reap what we sow; so taking the time to enjoy fellowship in prophetic prayer while working on a project can deepen intimacy with the Holy Spirit. Need some Resurrection Power in your life?
What if you had a Creative Reminder to add to your prayer room?
For example Prophetic Art, painting and drawing while in an atmosphere of worship and in prayer, creating as a way of expression and worship. There is an annointing for these types of prayers.
